Dexlansoprazole: Relief for Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Dexlansoprazole is a medication that helps manage acid reflux and other conditions involving excess stomach acid. It’s a type of drug called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces, making it easier to manage symptoms like heartburn.

    When Is Dexlansoprazole Prescribed?

    ● GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease): To help relieve symptoms of acid reflux, such as heartburn and regurgitation.
    ● Erosive Esophagitis: Used to heal damage caused by stomach acid to the lining of your esophagus.
    ● Hypersecretory Conditions: For conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where the stomach produces too much acid.

    How Does Dexlansoprazole Work?

Dexlansoprazole blocks the enzyme in the stomach that produces acid, which helps lower the levels of acid in the stomach. By reducing this acid, it provides relief from the burning sensation and other uncomfortable symptoms that come with acid reflux.

    How to Take Dexlansoprazole

    ● For GERD: The typical dose is 30 mg once a day, usually for about 4 weeks.
    ● For Erosive Esophagitis: The dose is generally 60 mg once a day, taken for up to 8 weeks.

It’s usually taken at the same time each day, with or without food. Always follow the advice of your doctor regarding how to take it.

    Possible Side Effects

Like all medications, Dexlansoprazole can cause side effects. Some of the more common ones include:

    ● Diarrhea
    ● Stomach Pain
    ● Gas (Flatulence)

These side effects are usually mild, but if they persist or get worse, let your doctor know.

    Who Should Avoid Dexlansoprazole?

This medication isn’t suitable for everyone. It should be avoided if you have:

    ● Severe Liver Problems: Your liver plays a role in processing the medication.
    ● Allergic Reactions to PPIs: If you’ve had a reaction to similar medications in the past, it’s best to avoid this drug.

Considerations for Pregnancy and Organ Health

    ● Pregnancy: Dexlansoprazole should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed, as there’s not enough research to say it’s completely safe.
    ● Liver and Kidney Health: If you have liver issues, your doctor may need to adjust your dose. It usually doesn’t impact kidney function directly.

    Brand Names You Might Know

    ● India: Sold under names like Dexlan and Dexilor.
    ● US: Known as Dexilant.
