    Understanding Depression

Depression is more than just the regular feeling of sadness. However, if acute sadness, including feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness, lasts for several days or weeks and prevents you from living your life, it may be more than sadness. That’s when it’s time to seek medical attention.

A debilitating mental health condition that can drain your energy, affect your daily life, and shroud you in darkness. According to the World Health Organization, over 280 million people worldwide (3.8% of population) struggle with depression, making it one of the most common mental health disorders. Women are around 50% more vulnerable than men to experience depression. Over 10% of pregnant and post-partum mothers experience depression globally. Recognizing the signs and understanding the treatment options available is vital for reclaiming your life.

    What Causes depression?

It is caused by problems with chemicals in brain called neurotransmitters. It may also run in the family. Other things like hormones, external drugs, childhood abuse, family or work problems can also play a role.

    Symptoms of Depression

    Emotional symptoms

    Physical symptoms

Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and irritability.

    Change in appetite or weight

Loss of interest in activities one once enjoyed

    Sleep disturbance (over sleepiness, sleeplessness)

    social withdrawal

    Fatigue

    Crankiness or irritability

    Loss of energy

    Restlessness

    Agitation or retardation

    Lose pleasure in life

Chronic aches, pains, headaches, or cramps.

    Suicidal ideation or suicide attempt

Different patterns of depressive episodes are

    ● Single episode depressive disorder

    ●  Recurrent depressive disorder : The individual has experienced at least two depressive episodes in the past

How do you know if you are depressed ?

People with depression feel down continuously for at least 2 weeks.
They also have one of the following
    1. Loss of interest in activities one once enjoyed
    2. Have feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and irritability most of the days almost everyday.

The Impact of Depression on Health

The effects of depression extend beyond mood. Chronic depression can lead to severe health complications, including:

    ● Physical Health Risks: Individuals with depression often experience chronic pain, fatigue, and increased susceptibility to illnesses.

    ● Mental Health Consequences: Depression frequently coexists with other mental health disorders, such as anxiety and substance abuse, creating a cycle that can be hard to break.

    Effective Treatments for Depression

The good news is that depression is treatable. Here are some effective options:

    ● Psychotherapy:

    ● Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This evidence-based approach focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with depression. By learning coping strategies, individuals can manage their symptoms more effectively. Therapy starts yielding results within 4 to 8 weeks.

    ● Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): IPT helps individuals improve their relationships and communication skills, which can alleviate symptoms of depression.

    ● Behavorial activation therapy : It is a mental health method in which a person uses their behaviors to influence their mental state. It is commonly used in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), although it can also be used on its own.

    ● Supportive psychotherapy: A form of therapy that focuses on a patient’s feelings and emotional tolerance to help them handle stress, anxiety, and other issues

    ● Psychodynamic therapy: It aims to create profound awareness and insight into human situations through the exploration of unconscious mind. This understanding results in considerable personal development and long-term changes in personality and behavior.

    ● Problem solving therapy: It’s the idea of concentrating on the problem at hand rather than psychodynamic therapy, which concentrates on the problem as well as its foundations.

    ● Medications: Antidepressants, such as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), can help regulate mood and alleviate symptoms. It is important to consult a psychiatrist to find the right medication and dosage. People with the right medication will start to feel better within 2 weeks but it can take around 4 to 8 weeks for the medicine to show full effect.

    ● ECT (Electro convulsive therapy): An efficacious treatment for severe major depression although relapse rate is high.

    ● TMS (Transmagnetic stimulation)

    ● Follow up with the clinician and therapist is very essential to prevent relapse.
