Xylometazoline: A Nasal Decongestant for Relief from Nasal Congestion
Xylometazoline is a topical nasal decongestant used to relieve symptoms of nasal congestion associated with colds, allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis. It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-adrenergic agonists, which help to constrict blood vessels in the nasal passages, thereby reducing swelling and congestion.
Mechanism of Action
Xylometazoline works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the blood vessels/ arterioles of the nasal mucosa, causing vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels). This reduces swelling and allows the airways to open up, making it easier to breathe through the nose.
Indications
● Nasal Congestion: Used to treat nasal stuffiness caused by colds, allergies, or sinusitis.
● Allergic Rhinitis: Provides relief from nasal congestion and sneezing associated with seasonal or perennial allergies.
● Sinusitis: Helps to reduce congestion in the sinuses caused by bacterial or viral infections.
Dosage and Administration
● Adults and Children over 12 years: 1-2 spray of 0.05% Xylometazoline into each nostril every 8–10 hours as needed. Maximum of three doses per day.
● Children (2-12 years): 0.05% Xylometazoline is typically prescribed, with one spray in each nostril up to 2-3 times daily, not to exceed 3 sprays in 24 hours.
Side Effects
● Common: Dryness, irritation or burning sensation in the nose, and sneezing.
● Serious: Prolonged use (more than 3–5 days) can cause rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa), where nasal congestion worsens upon discontinuation of the drug.
Pregnancy Category: Category C – Use during pregnancy should be avoided unless absolutely necessary, and only under medical supervision.
