Teicoplanin: A Potent Antibiotic for Serious antibiotic resistant Infections like MRSA

Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, particularly those caused by gram-positive bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis in bacteria, ultimately leading to their death.

    Mechanism of Action

Teicoplanin binds to the D-alanyl-D-alanine portion of the bacterial cell wall precursor, preventing cell wall synthesis, which leads to bacterial lysis.

    Indications

    ● MRSA Infections: For infections resistant to other antibiotics.

    ● Endocarditis: Infections of the heart valves.

    ● Soft Tissue Infections: Severe skin and tissue infections.

    Dosage and Administration

    ● Adults: Initial dose is 6-12 mg/kg every 12 hours for 3-5 doses, adjusted based on the severity of the infection. Treatment should not exceed 4 months.

    ● Pediatric Dosage: Adjusted based on weight and condition severity. Initially given 10-16 mg/kg on day 1 and 8 mg/kg once a day on subsequent doses.

    Side Effects

    ● Common: Nausea, fever, rash, and phlebitis (inflammation of veins).

    ● Serious: Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) and ototoxicity (hearing damage).

Pregnancy Category: Category C – Use only if necessary during pregnancy.

    Common Brands

    ● Targocid
