Ketorolac: The Powerful NSAID for Pain Relief

    What is Ketorolac?

Ketorolac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to control moderate to severe acute pain. It is generally prescribed after surgery or injury to provide short-term pain relief. Ketorolac is also available in oral, intramuscular, and intravenous forms, making it useful for various medical needs.

    How Ketorolac Works

Ketorolac works by inhibiting the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which are involved in the production of prostaglandin precursors that cause pain and inflammation. This action reduces inflammation and alleviates pain effectively. Secondarily, it also inhibits the aggregation of neutrophils and lymphocytes and other proinflammatory cytokines, resulting in a decrease in inflammation, pain, and fever.

    When to Use Ketorolac

    ● Post-Surgical Pain: Ketorolac is commonly prescribed for acute pain after surgeries like dental work or joint replacement.
    ● Moderate to Severe Pain: It is effective for pain relief in conditions such as musculoskeletal injuries, renal colic (kidney stones), and bursitis.
    ● Inflammatory Conditions: Ketorolac is used for conditions that involve inflammation, such as gout or tendinitis.

    Dosage

    ● Adult Dose: 30 mg intramuscularly or intravenously every 6 hours, not to exceed 120 mg per day. Orally 20 mg it is taken initially followed by 10 mg every 4-6 hours as needed. Maximum dose is 40 mg/day.
    ● Pediatric Dose:  Although the safety and efficacy of ketorolac is not established below 17 years of age, it is used in postoperative pain management. Typically the dose is 0.5 mg/kg/dose every 6–8 hours. Maximum dose is 30 mg/dose. It should not exceed 3-5 days of continuous administration to avoid toxicity.

    Side Effects

    ● Common Effects: Nausea, dizziness, gastrointestinal discomfort, and headache.
    ● Serious adverse effects: GI bleeding, renal toxicity, and cardiovascular complications like hypertension and heart attacks with prolonged use.

Common Indian brands : Ketorol, Ketof, Ketanov.

    FAQ

Can Ketorolac be used for chronic pain?

Ketorolac is typically used for short-term pain management, and prolonged use can lead to significant side effects, including gastric bleeding and kidney damage.

What is the maximum duration I can take Ketorolac?

Ketorolac should only be used for 5 days or less to minimize the risk of side effects.

    Does Ketorolac cause drowsiness?

While Ketorolac is not commonly sedating, it may cause dizziness or drowsiness in some individuals, especially when taken with other sedative medications.

    Disclaimer

Ketorolac should be used with caution, particularly for individuals with gastric issues, kidney disease, or a history of cardiovascular disease. Regular monitoring is advised during use.
