Ultrasound – General Overview of Imaging

Ultrasound is the most common non radiation based imaging technique which uses high-frequency ultrasound waves to produce real-time images of internal structures. It is used across various medical specialties for imaging the abdomen, heart, muscles, tissues, and fetal development during pregnancy.

Indications for Ultrasound:

● Abdominal conditions: To evaluate organs like the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and spleen for conditions like stones, tumors, or cysts.

● Pregnancy: To monitor fetal development and check for complications like ectopic pregnancy or multiple pregnancies.

● Musculoskeletal disorders: To assess joint, ligament, and tendon injuries or conditions like arthritis.

● Cardiac evaluations: Through echocardiography to visualize heart function and structure.

How Ultrasound Works:

● A small amount of gel is applied to the skin, and a transducer (probe) is moved over the area being examined. The transducer emits sound waves, and the echoes produced by these waves are used to create an image of the internal structures.

Normal Range:

● A normal ultrasound should show no abnormalities in the organs or structures being examined, with clear and accurate images.

Abnormal Test Significance:

● Abnormal findings can indicate conditions like tumors, cysts, gallstones, liver disease, or abnormal fetal development in pregnancy.

Management Based on Results:

● For abnormal findings: Further tests like CT scans, MRI, or biopsy may be required for confirmation and treatment.
