The Ketone Test measures the levels of ketones in the blood or urine. High ketone levels are a sign of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening condition that can occur in individuals with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes.

    Indications for Ketone Test:

    ● Uncontrolled diabetes: To check for ketones in individuals with poorly controlled blood glucose levels.

    ● Symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA): Such as nausea, vomiting, fruity-smelling breath, and abdominal pain.

    ● Sick days: During illness or infection, the body may produce more ketones, so monitoring is essential for diabetes patients.

    How Ketone Test Works:

    ● The test can be performed on a blood sample (blood ketone test) or urine sample (urine ketone test) to measure the level of acetoacetate, acetone, and beta-hydroxybutyrate—the three main ketones produced during fat metabolism.

    Normal Range:

    ● Blood ketone levels: 0.6–1.5 mmol/L.

    ● Urine ketone levels: Negative or trace.

    Abnormal Test Significance:

    ● Elevated ketone levels: Indicate the body is burning fat instead of carbohydrates for energy, often seen in diabetic ketoacidosis or in individuals following a ketogenic diet.

    Management Based on Results:

    ● For high ketone levels: Immediate intervention is needed to prevent diabetic ketoacidosis, which may involve insulin therapy and fluid replacement.

    Price in India:

    ● Approx. ₹500 – ₹1,000 for ketone testing.

Why are ketones dangerous in diabetes?

High ketone levels can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Can I check ketones at home?

Yes, you can check ketones at home using blood glucose meters or urine test strips.

Disclaimer: The ketone test is useful in identifying DKA and monitoring diabetes. High ketones should always be discussed with a healthcare provider.

    How HealthPil Can Help:

At HealthPil, we connect you with endocrinologists who can help interpret ketone test results and provide guidance on diabetes management to prevent complications like diabetic ketoacidosis.
