Jaundice Test – Identifying the Cause of Yellowing Skin and Eyes

Jaundice is a common medical condition where the skin, whites of the eyes, and mucous membranes turn yellow due to high levels of bilirubin in the bloodstream. It is a symptom, not a disease in itself, and requires further investigation to determine the underlying cause. The Jaundice Test measures the bilirubin levels in your blood to diagnose conditions such as liver disease, gallbladder disease, or hemolytic anemia.

    Indications for Jaundice Test:

    ● Yellowing of the skin or eyes: The primary symptom of jaundice is yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes.

    ● Fatigue and weakness: People with jaundice often feel fatigued or weak due to liver dysfunction.

    ● Abdominal pain: Pain in the upper abdomen, especially in the right side, may indicate liver or gallbladder disease.

    ● Dark urine and pale stools: These are common symptoms of obstructive jaundice, which suggests a blockage in the bile ducts.

    How the Jaundice Test Works:

The test measures bilirubin levels in the blood, including both total bilirubin and its direct and indirect forms:

    ● Total bilirubin: Measures the overall level of bilirubin in the bloodstream.

    ● Direct bilirubin (Conjugated): Measures bilirubin that has been processed by the liver.

    ● Indirect bilirubin (Unconjugated): Measures bilirubin before it has been processed by the liver.

    Normal Range:

    ● Total Bilirubin: 0.1–1.2 mg/dL
    ● Direct Bilirubin: 0.0–0.3 mg/dL
    ● Indirect Bilirubin: 0.2–0.8 mg/dL

    Abnormal Test Significance:

    ● Elevated Total Bilirubin: High levels of bilirubin can indicate liver problems such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. It can also indicate gallstones, bile duct obstruction, or hemolysis.

    ● High Direct Bilirubin: Suggests obstructive jaundice, where the bile flow is blocked.

    ● High Indirect Bilirubin: Indicates problems with the liver’s ability to process bilirubin, often seen in conditions like hemolytic anemia or Gilbert’s syndrome.

    Management Based on Results:

    ● For liver diseases: Treatment includes antiviral medications for hepatitis, liver transplantation for cirrhosis, or medications to manage liver enzyme levels.

    ● For obstructive jaundice: Treatment may involve surgery or stenting to remove blockages in the bile ducts.

    ● For hemolytic anemia: Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause of the excessive destruction of red blood cells.

    Price in India:

    ● Approx. ₹500 – ₹2,000 for bilirubin tests (total, direct, indirect).

    FAQs

    What causes jaundice?

Jaundice is caused by high levels of bilirubin, which can result from liver diseases, gallbladder issues, or red blood cell breakdown.

    Can jaundice be cured?

The treatment of jaundice depends on the underlying cause. In many cases, liver disease or bile duct obstruction can be treated with medication or surgery.

    Disclaimer:

A jaundice test provides information on bilirubin levels, but the underlying condition causing jaundice must be determined by a healthcare provider based on clinical findings and other tests.

    How HealthPil Can Help:

At HealthPil, we offer expert consultations with gastroenterologists and hepatologists who can help interpret your jaundice test results and guide you through the appropriate treatment for liver and biliary diseases.
