Immune Function Tests – Assessing Your Body’s Defense Mechanism

Immune Function Tests measure the activity of the immune system in defending the body against infections and diseases. These tests are crucial for diagnosing immune system disorders, such as autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, and allergic reactions. Regular immune function testing can help determine if your immune system is working properly or if it’s compromised.

    Indications for Immune Function Tests:

    ● Frequent or severe infections: If you’re prone to recurrent infections like pneumonia or sinusitis, an immune function test can help evaluate immune system strength.

    ● Autoimmune disease: To assess autoimmune conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis, where the immune system attacks healthy cells.

    ● Unexplained fatigue: If you experience chronic fatigue without an obvious cause, this test can help check for immune dysfunction.

    ● Cancer treatment monitoring: To assess immune status in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or immunotherapy.

Tests Included in Immune Function Tests:

    1. Immunoglobulin Levels (IgG, IgA, IgM): These antibodies play a critical role in immune defense. Low levels of immunoglobulins may indicate an immune deficiency.

    2. CD4 and CD8 Count: These are types of T-cells. A low CD4 count can suggest HIV or immune system suppression.

    3. Cytokine Levels: Cytokines are proteins involved in immune response regulation. Elevated or reduced cytokine levels can suggest infection or chronic inflammation.

    4. Complement System: The complement system is a part of the immune system that enhances antibodies. Abnormalities in complement proteins can be linked to autoimmune diseases or chronic infections.

    Normal Range:

    ● IgG: 700–1,600 mg/dL
    ● IgA: 70–400 mg/dL
    ● IgM: 40–230 mg/dL
    ● CD4 count: 500–1,500 cells/mm³
    ● CD8 count: 300–1,100 cells/mm³

    Abnormal Test Significance:

    ● Low Immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM): Suggests immune deficiency, which can predispose to infections.

    ● Low CD4 count: Indicates immunocompromised states such as HIV/AIDS or autoimmune diseases.

    ● High Cytokine Levels: Can suggest chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, or infection.

    ● Low Complement Levels: Often associated with conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or rheumatoid arthritis.

    Management Based on Results:

    ● For immune deficiency: Depending on the underlying cause, treatment can involve immunoglobulin replacement therapy, antiviral medications, or bone marrow transplants.

    ● For autoimmune diseases: Medications such as immunosuppressants, biologics, or steroids may be used to regulate immune function.

    ● For high cytokine levels: Anti-inflammatory treatments or medications to regulate immune responses.

    Price in India:

    ● Approx. ₹3,000 – ₹8,000 for a full immune function panel.

    FAQs

What is a normal immune function test result?

Normal results suggest your immune system is functioning properly without deficiencies or overactive responses.

What does a low CD4 count mean?

A low CD4 count can indicate HIV/AIDS or an immunocompromised state, requiring further evaluation and treatment.

    Disclaimer:

Immune function tests are essential for diagnosing immune system disorders. Test results should be discussed with a healthcare provider to understand their significance fully.

    How HealthPil Can Help:

At HealthPil, we provide consultations with immunologists who can interpret your immune function test results and recommend personalized treatment plans for autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, and chronic infections.
