The Dangers of Neglecting Mental Health Treatment

Depression is a serious mental health disorder that has affected millions of people globally every year. When left untreated/unattended it can lead to severe complications such as suicidal ideation, substance abuse, and long-term mental health issues. Unfortunately, many people dismiss depression as “just sadness” and avoid seeking professional help.

A Patient’s Story: Ignoring Depression for Years Led to a Mental Health Crisis

Vikram (name changed), a 28-year-old man, was struggling with low mood, somatic complaints (like headaches and body aches), and social withdrawal for the past three years. Despite clear signs of major depressive disorder, his family did not take his condition seriously. They consulted a doctor who recommended a psychiatrist review and advised starting him on antidepressant therapy but the family dismissed his symptoms as a phase and encouraged him to “tough it out.”

Vikram began experiencing suicidal ideation, feeling hopeless and overwhelmed by his emotions. His family, still in denial about his condition, took him to a local faith healer, believing his depression was a spiritual problem. Eventually, Vikram’s condition worsened to the point where he was unable to work or participate in daily life. Only then did his family consult a psychiatrist, who diagnosed him with major depression and started treatment with antidepressants and psychotherapy.

    What is Depression?

Depression is more than just the regular feeling of sadness. However, if acute sadness, including feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness, lasts for several days or weeks and prevents you from enjoying activities that you earlier found interesting then we can call it depression. It can even affect a person’s thoughts, behavior, and physical health.

    Common Symptoms of Depression:

    • Prolonged sadness or low mood

    • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed

    • Fatigue or lack of energy

    • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

    • Changes in sleep or appetite

    • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt

    • Suicidal thoughts

    The Dangers of Ignoring Depression

Vikram’s case highlights the consequences of ignoring mental health problems like depression. Without proper treatment, depression can lead to severe complications like suicidal ideation and social isolation. Faith healers and unqualified practitioners cannot treat depression, and delaying proper care can make recovery more difficult.

    Proper Treatment for Depression:

    1. Antidepressant Medications:

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and other antidepressants are commonly prescribed to help balance brain chemicals responsible for mood regulation. These medications can take several weeks to show effects but are crucial for long-term recovery.

    2. Psychotherapy (Counselling):

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other forms of psychotherapy are effective treatments for depression. Therapy helps patients identify and change negative thought patterns.

    3. Lifestyle Modifications:

Regular physical activity, maintaining a routine, and engaging in social activities can help manage depressive symptoms. However, these lifestyle changes should complement, not replace, professional treatment.

    4. Emergency Support:

If a patient is experiencing suicidal thoughts, it’s crucial to seek immediate help from a mental health professional or call a suicide hotline.

What Happens if Depression is Left Untreated?

    1. Suicidal Ideation and Attempts:

Untreated depression can lead to suicidal ideation and attempts.

    2. Social Isolation and Relationship Problems:

Depression can cause a person to withdraw from loved ones, leading to strained relationships and loneliness, which can worsen the condition.

    3. Substance Abuse:

Many people with untreated depression turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with their emotions, leading to addiction and further health issues.

    4. Chronic Mental Health Issues:

Untreated depression can lead to long-term mental health problems, making recovery more difficult and requiring more intensive treatment.
