Traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are often praised for their natural, holistic approach. Well, so many of these practices have helped people for generations. But it’s also important to understand that not all herbal treatments are risk-free. While some herbs are believed to support memory and cognitive function, research is now showing that certain preparations may lead to serious neurological issues.
One of the biggest concerns is contamination. Many herbal products have been found to contain harmful levels of heavy metals, and incorrect dosages only make things worse. These factors have been linked to long-term brain and nerve damage in several reported cases.
Real-Life Case: Memory Loss Tied to Herbal Supplements
A 48-year-old man started experiencing memory lapses, confusion, and trouble with coordination after months of taking herbal supplements that included Ashwagandha and Shilajit, both well-known in Ayurveda. When doctors ran blood tests, they found high levels of lead and mercury. He was diagnosed with heavy metal-induced neurotoxicity. Chelation therapy helped ease some of the symptoms, but a few cognitive problems didn’t fully go away.
What the Data Is Telling Us About Ayurvedic and TCM Remedies
● Heavy Metal Neurotoxicity
In the United States, nearly 40 percent of Ayurvedic products tested were found to contain lead, mercury, or arsenic all toxic to the nervous system. These metals have been linked to conditions like peripheral neuropathy, memory decline, and poor motor function.
A separate meta-analysis found that over 30 percent of herbal supplement-related neurotoxicity cases were caused by heavy metal poisoning. Lead and mercury affect how your brain communicates, interfere with neurotransmitters, and cause oxidative stress that can damage brain cells.
● Psychiatric Effects of Common Herbal Remedies
Herbs like Ashwagandha, Brahmi, and Ginseng are often promoted for boosting memory and brain function, and while they can be helpful, taking too much of them is quite risky, to say the least. Some people report feeling unusually anxious, emotionally unsettled, or even paranoid when they overuse these supplements.
One study (a double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT published in Psychiatry Research) actually found that while Ashwagandha is safe at normal doses, higher doses taken over longer periods led to increased anxiety and even some cognitive confusion in participants.
● Seizures Linked to Contaminated Ayurvedic Remedies
In 2021, a case series reported three individuals who developed repeated seizures after using Ayurvedic products marketed as cognitive enhancers. Lab tests later found high mercury levels in all three patients. We are well aware that Mercury is known to disturb calcium balance in the brain, which can lead to seizures.
Mercury and lead, both sometimes found in herbal products, have also been linked to nerve damage and motor skill impairment. A study published in Toxicology Reports explained that these metals disrupt the production of myelin, the protective coating around nerves which may lead to long-term neurological problems.
More Evidence From Global Studies
A systematic review published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that around 35 percent of Ayurvedic and TCM products from across the globe had lead and mercury levels above safe limits. This kind of contamination raises the risk of serious issues like memory loss and cognitive decline.
Even regulatory bodies like the FDA have flagged herbal products for containing unsafe ingredients.
Case Report: Nerve Damage Due to Chinese Herbal Remedies
Another report detailed the case of a 56-year-old man who developed worsening numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness after long-term use of Chinese herbal medicine for joint pain. Blood tests showed dangerously high levels of lead, and he was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. His symptoms only began to improve after several sessions of aggressive chelation therapy.
Quick Summary of Neurological Risks by Herb
● Ashwagandha and Brahmi: Generally safe in low doses but may cause mood swings and mental fog when overused.
● Ginseng: Too much can lead to tremors, restlessness, and brain fog.
● Shilajit and similar substances: May contain traces of mercury or lead, posing serious risks to brain and nerve function.
Disclaimer
This article is only meant to raise awareness about some of the possible neurological risks associated with unregulated herbal supplements. It’s not a criticism of traditional medicine, but a reminder to avoid self-medicating with over-the-counter products that haven’t been properly tested. Always speak to a trusted practitioner before starting any treatment.
