Renal Angiography is a diagnostic imaging technique used to evaluate the blood vessels that supply the kidneys. It is a type of angiogram that helps doctors examine the renal arteries for blockages, narrowing, or abnormalities that could affect kidney function. This test is often recommended for patients suspected of having renal artery stenosis, hypertension, or kidney diseases that might involve blood supply issues.

    Indications for Renal Angiography:

    ● Hypertension: In cases of secondary hypertension, where high blood pressure is caused by narrowing or blockage of the renal arteries.

    ● Kidney vascular abnormalities: To identify renal artery stenosis, aneurysms, or abnormalities in the blood flow to the kidneys.

    ● Kidney transplantation: To assess the vascular health of the kidney before or after transplantation.

    ● Unexplained kidney failure: When other diagnostic tests, such as ultrasound or CT scans, do not provide enough information, renal angiography may help pinpoint the cause.

    How Renal Angiography Works:

    ● Contrast dye is injected into the renal arteries through a catheter inserted into an artery, usually in the groin. The dye makes the blood vessels visible on X-ray or CT scan, allowing the doctor to identify blockages or abnormalities in the renal circulation.

    Normal Range:

    ● Normal angiographic results show clear, unobstructed renal arteries with adequate blood flow to the kidneys.

    Abnormal Test Significance:

    ● Renal artery stenosis: Narrowing of the renal arteries, which can lead to kidney damage or high blood pressure.

    ● Aneurysm: Abnormal bulging or enlargement of the renal artery, which could be at risk of rupture.

    ● Arteriovenous fistulas: Abnormal connections between arteries and veins that may affect kidney function.

    ● Blockages: Complete or partial blockage of the renal arteries due to atherosclerosis or other conditions.

    Management Based on Results:

    ● For renal artery stenosis: Treatment may involve angioplasty, stenting, or medications to manage blood pressure.

    ● For aneurysms or fistulas: Surgical interventions may be required to repair or manage these abnormalities.

    ● For blockages: Endovascular procedures like balloon angioplasty or stent placement may be used to restore blood flow to the kidneys.

    Price in India:

Approx. ₹3000 – ₹8,000 for renal angiography, depending on the type of facility and diagnostic method used.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is renal angiography painful?

The procedure may cause some discomfort due to the insertion of the catheter but is generally well-tolerated under local anesthesia.

How long does it take to recover from renal angiography?

Most patients can go home the same day, but rest is recommended for 24 hours. Activity should be limited for a few days after the procedure.

Disclaimer: Renal angiography is a diagnostic procedure performed by trained specialists. It may involve risks such as infection or bleeding at the catheter insertion site. Your doctor will guide you on post-procedure care.

    How HealthPil Can Help:

At HealthPil, we provide access to nephrologists and vascular surgeons who can interpret renal angiography results and recommend the most appropriate treatment options.
