    The Collapse…

Rani’s ordeal began while she was waiting in line at a government hospital. Suddenly, she collapsed, prompting immediate action from those around her. Rushed to the emergency room, Rani’s condition was alarming—she was severely anemic, jaundiced, and in shock. The husband informed that the patient was sick for a few days but it was difficult for them to seek treatment in a private hospital. They waited to get an appointment in a big government hospital after proper referral.

The medical team quickly initiated tests to determine the cause of her distress. The results confirmed Hepatitis E. The patient had already developed hepatic failure and her liver enzymes were raised more than hundred times of normal range.

    A Fight Against the Odds

Rani’s condition continued to deteriorate, even after receiving prompt care such as blood transfusions, IV fluids, and medications. Within 2 days, she developed hepatic encephalopathy, a complication characterised by confusion and impaired brain function due to liver failure. Unfortunately, she also began to experience internal bleeding.

The medical staff worked tirelessly to save both Rani and her baby. However, as the hours passed, it became increasingly clear that her liver was failing. The reality of her situation hit hard, and despite the team’s best efforts, Rani sadly passed away from massive internal bleeding just 48 hours after she collapsed.

    The Husband’s Anguish

After Rani’s death, her husband was devastated by grief and confusion. He initially lashed out at the medical staff and blamed them for her death. The resident doctor, who had been there for Rani from the start, took the time out to sit down with him and explain the severity of her condition.

As the husband listened, the truth began to sink in. He realized that, despite the team’s tireless efforts, Rani’s illness had been far too advanced to overcome. He then apologized for his anger, understanding that there was nothing more that they could do.

    The Aftermath

After the tragedy, the hospital staff came together to support Rani’s husband, even raising funds so he could take her home for a proper farewell.

As Rani’s body lay in the ward, her young child played hide and seek with her saree, completely unaware of the tragedy that just occured. The sound of his innocent laughter echoed through the ward, creating a sharp contrast to the heavy reality of her absence. For the doctors who often face life and death, the sight of a little boy still waiting for his mom left a lasting impression.

A Call for Awareness and Compassion

Rani’s tragic story highlights the need for awareness of Hepatitis E, especially among pregnant women. It is undeniably important to get medical advice in preventing severe complications and improving treatment outcomes.

Rani’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of how fragile life can be and the deep impact of loss. If you or someone you know is showing symptoms of Hepatitis E, it’s really important to get medical help as soon as possible. Early intervention can make all the difference.
