Valacyclovir: The Antiviral Treatment for Herpes and Shingles
Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by the herpes virus, including herpes simplex virus (HSV), shingles (herpes zoster), and chickenpox. It works by inhibiting viral replication, which reduces the severity and duration of symptoms.
Mechanism of Action
Valacyclovir is converted into its active form, acyclovir, in the body. Acyclovir interferes with the DNA replication of the herpes virus, preventing it from multiplying and spreading.
Indications
● Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): Used for treating oral and genital herpes outbreaks.
● Shingles (Herpes Zoster): Reduces pain, blisters, and duration of the illness.
● Chickenpox: For treating primary infections in immunocompromised patients.
Dosage and Administration
● Adults: Typically, 1 gram twice or thrice a day for 5-10 days, depending on the infection. The dose is often higher for cold sores.
● Pediatric Dosage: Adjusted based on age and weight. Generally started with 20 mg/kg every 8 hours for 5 days. Maximum dose is 1 gram twice a day.
Side Effects
● Common: Nausea, headache, dizziness, and stomach pain.
● Serious: Kidney problems, neurotoxicity (confusion, tremors), and skin rashes.
Pregnancy Category: Category B – Generally considered safe during pregnancy when prescribed by a doctor.
