Salbutamol: An Effective Bronchodilator for Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Salbutamol is a widely used medication for managing asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other respiratory conditions. It is a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) that relaxes the bronchial smooth muscles, allowing easier breathing.

    What is Salbutamol?

Salbutamol (also known as Albuterol in the U.S.) is a bronchodilator that belongs to a class of drugs called short-acting beta-agonists (SABAs). It  stimulates the beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscles of the lungs, causing the muscles to relax and the airways to dilate, making it easier to breathe. It is primarily used to treat asthma attacks and to manage symptoms of COPD.

    Indications for Salbutamol

    ● Asthma: It helps prevent and treat bronchospasms during asthma attacks.

    ● Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): It relieves excessive wheezing and shortness of breath in COPD patients.

    ● Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction: Salbutamol can be used as a preventive treatment before exercise in individuals who experience bronchoconstriction triggered by physical activity.

    Dosage and Administration

    Adult Dosage:

    ● For Asthma: 100-200 mcg via inhaler every 4-6 hours as needed.

    ● For COPD: 100-200 mcg via inhaler every 4-6 hours as needed.

    ● For Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm: 200 mcg 15-30 minutes before exercise.

    Pediatric Dosage:

    ● For Asthma and COPD: 100 mcg via inhaler every 4-6 hours as needed (for children above 4 years).

    ● For Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm: 100 mcg 15 minutes before exercise.

    Side Effects of Salbutamol

    ● Common: Tremors, nervousness, dizziness, headaches, dry mouth.

    ● Serious: Tachycardia (fast heart rate), hypokalemia (low potassium), and paradoxical bronchospasm (worsening of symptoms).

    ● Pregnancy Category: Category C (should be used with caution during pregnancy).

    Common Brands in India

    ● Asthavent

    ● Asthalin

    ● Salbair

What is the typical dosage of Salbutamol?
For asthma, the typical dose is 100-200 mcg via inhaler every 4-6 hours as needed. It can also be used as a nebulizer solution in severe cases.
Can Salbutamol be used for children?
