Amoxicillin: Uses, Dosage, Side Effects, and Indications
Within the penicillin class, amoxicillin is a commonly used antibiotic that works well against a variety of bacterial illnesses. Because of its effectiveness and comparatively few adverse effects, it is commonly given for infections of the skin, ears, respiratory system, and urinary tract.
What is Amoxicillin?

Common Indications for Amoxicillin
Amoxicillin is prescribed to treat the following conditions:
1. Respiratory Tract Infections – Such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

3. Dental infections and prosthetic joint infections.

Dosage and Routes of Administration
The dosage changes based on the infection and patient age group:
● Adults: 500 mg to 875 mg every 12 hours, or 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours.
● Children: 25-50 mg per kg of body weight, divided into two or three doses per day Routes of Administration.
● Oral Tablets or Capsules: Common for adults and older children.
● Oral Suspension: Often used for younger children or patients who have difficulty swallowing pills.
● Missed dosage: Patients should take the missed dose as soon as they remember it. They need not take the missing dose if the next one close. Next dose has to be taken at the scheduled time. No need to take two doses to make up for it.
Adverse Reactions and Side Effects
While amoxicillin is well-tolerated by most patients, side effects can include:
1. Gastrointestinal Distress – Such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
2. Headache, agitation, anxiety, confusion – Swelling of lymph nodes (Lymphadenitis)
3. Allergic Reactions – From mild rash to severe anaphylaxis, particularly in patients with penicillin allergies.
4. Genital and urinary infections – Candida infection of vulva, vagina.
5. Oral candida infection (Oral thrush)
6. Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea – Amoxicillin may disrupt normal gut flora.
7. Liver(Hepatic) side-effects : Jaundice, hepatitis, increased liver enzymes.
Contraindications
Amoxicillin should not be used in the following situations:
1. Penicillin Allergy – Patients with a known allergy to penicillin or cephalosporins or any component of the formulation.
2. Mononucleosis – Using amoxicillin in patients with mono may cause a widespread rash.
3. Liver and Kidney Disease – Caution is needed, and dosage adjustments may be required.
4. Patients chronically on penicillin are at increased risk of fungal and bacterial superinfection.
Effects on Pregnancy, Liver, and Kidney
● Pregnancy: Amoxicillin is generally considered safe in pregnancy (Category B. It is excreted in breast milk hence used with caution.
● Liver: Rare instances of liver enzyme elevation have been reported, but severe liver damage is uncommon.
● Kidney: Patients with impaired kidney function require dosage adjustments after checking the kidney function tests.
