    Frequently Asked Questions

What types of cancer does Dr. Nilaxi Khataniar treat?

Dr. Nilaxi specializes in treating brain tumors, breast cancer, cervical and uterine cancers, throat and head-neck cancers, lymphomas, and also helps with cancer-related pain management using advanced radiation techniques.

What is radiation therapy and how does it work in cancer treatment?

Radiation therapy uses targeted high-energy beams (like X-rays) to destroy or shrink cancer cells. It’s commonly used for breast, cervical, head-neck, and brain tumors, often alongside surgery or chemotherapy.

Is radiation treatment painful or risky?

Radiation is a painless and non-invasive procedure. While mild side effects like skin irritation or fatigue can occur, it is precisely targeted and safe when done under expert supervision like Dr. Nilaxi’s.

When is radiation therapy recommended in breast cancer?

Radiation is often advised after lumpectomy or mastectomy to reduce recurrence risk. It’s also used in locally advanced breast cancer or when lymph nodes are involved.

Can I consult a radiation oncologist online for a second opinion before starting treatment?

Absolutely. Dr. Nilaxi Khataniar offers second opinions via teleconsultation, helping patients understand their options before starting radiotherapy, chemo-radiation, or palliative cancer care.

How are brain tumors treated with radiation?

Brain tumors are treated using precise methods like stereotactic radiotherapy or intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to minimize damage to healthy brain tissue while targeting the tumor.

Is radiation effective for cervical and uterine cancers?

Yes. Radiation is a mainstay treatment for cervical cancer, especially in advanced stages. It may be combined with chemotherapy (chemo-radiation) and used post-surgery for uterine cancers to reduce recurrence.

What are the common side effects of head and neck radiation?

Patients may experience dry mouth, sore throat, skin changes, difficulty swallowing, or fatigue. Dr. Nilaxi helps manage these side effects through supportive care and nutritional guidance.

Can radiation help with cancer-related pain and symptom relief?

Yes. In palliative settings, radiation is used to relieve bone pain, bleeding, nerve compression, or swelling caused by tumors, significantly improving quality of life.

What is the difference between external beam radiation and brachytherapy?

External beam radiation is delivered from outside the body, while brachytherapy involves placing a radioactive source near or inside the tumor (e.g., in cervical cancer). Dr. Nilaxi will advise based on cancer type.

When is Dr. Nilaxi Khataniar available for teleconsultation?

She is available on all days except Sunday, from 11 AM to 1 PM, for online cancer consultations through HealthPil. Patients can book easily from anywhere in India.

Why do patients recommend Dr. Nilaxi Khataniar for radiation oncology?

Patients trust Dr. Nilaxi for her accurate treatment planning, compassionate care, and experience in managing both curative and palliative cancer cases using modern, patient-friendly radiation techniques.
