Loperamide: The Anti-Diarrheal Medication for Gastrointestinal Relief
What is Loperamide?
Loperamide is an anti-diarrheal medication used to treat acute and chronic diarrhea. It slows down the peristaltic movement of the intestines, allowing more water absorption and firmer stools.
How Loperamide Works
Loperamide binds to opioid receptors in the intestines, reducing motility and allowing more time for water to be absorbed from the stool. This reduces the frequency and volume of stools and controls diarrhoea.
When to Use Loperamide
● Acute Diarrhea: Loperamide is commonly used to treat short-term diarrhea caused by infections or dietary issues.
● Chronic Diarrhea: Used for chronic conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
● Traveler’s Diarrhea: Provides relief for diarrhea when traveling, reducing the frequency of bowel movements.
Dosage
● Adult Dose for Acute Diarrhea: Start with 4 mg, which can be followed by 2 mg after each loose stool, not to exceed a dose of 16 mg per day.
● Pediatric Dose: Children aged 6-12 years can take 2 mg initially, followed by 1 mg after each loose stool, not exceeding 6 mg per day.

● Common Effects: Constipation, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and dizziness.
● Serious Adverse Effects: Toxic megacolon, especially in patients with ulcerative colitis or inflammatory bowel disease.
