Ketorolac: The Powerful NSAID for Pain Relief
What is Ketorolac?
Ketorolac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to control moderate to severe acute pain. It is generally prescribed after surgery or injury to provide short-term pain relief. Ketorolac is also available in oral, intramuscular, and intravenous forms, making it useful for various medical needs.
How Ketorolac Works
Ketorolac works by inhibiting the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which are involved in the production of prostaglandin precursors that cause pain and inflammation. This action reduces inflammation and alleviates pain effectively. Secondarily, it also inhibits the aggregation of neutrophils and lymphocytes and other proinflammatory cytokines, resulting in a decrease in inflammation, pain, and fever.
When to Use Ketorolac
● Post-Surgical Pain: Ketorolac is commonly prescribed for acute pain after surgeries like dental work or joint replacement.
● Moderate to Severe Pain: It is effective for pain relief in conditions such as musculoskeletal injuries, renal colic (kidney stones), and bursitis.
● Inflammatory Conditions: Ketorolac is used for conditions that involve inflammation, such as gout or tendinitis.
