Vitamin B2, also known as Riboflavin, is a water soluble vitamin vital for the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, and it is crucial for maintaining healthy skin, eyes, nervous system and tissue respiration. It plays an important role in activation of pyridoxine and conversion of tryptophan to niacin.
Indications
● Ariboflavinosis: Caused by riboflavin deficiency, leading to cracked lips, sore throat, and eye irritation.
● Migraine Prophylaxis: Riboflavin has been shown to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines.
● Eye Health: Riboflavin helps maintain healthy vision and is used in the treatment of cataracts.
● Anemia: In combination with other B vitamins, it helps in the production of red blood cells.
Dosage and Administration
● Adults: The RDA is 1.1-1.3 mg per day.
● Therapeutic Use: For migraine prevention, doses may range from 200–400 mg/day.
● Pediatric Dosage: 0.3–0.8 mg/day, depending on age.
Toxicity and Side Effects
● Toxicity: Riboflavin toxicity is rare, as excess amounts are excreted in the urine. High doses do not typically cause harm.
● Side Effects: Riboflavin may cause urine discoloration (yellow) at high doses, but this is harmless.
