Simvastatin: Medication for Lowering Cholesterol and Preventing Heart Disease
Simvastatin is a HMG COA reductase inhibitor prescribed to reduce cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of atherosclerotic heart disease. As a member of the statin class of drugs, it is vital in preventing stroke and heart attack by lowering LDL cholesterol levels.
What is Simvastatin?
Simvastatin works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in cholesterol production in the liver. By reducing cholesterol production, Simvastatin helps to lower LDL cholesterol, apo B and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL cholesterol.
Indications for Simvastatin
● Hyperlipidemia: Simvastatin is used to lower high cholesterol levels.
● Prevention of Cardiovascular Events: It is prescribed for the prevention of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular issues in high-risk patients.
● Familial Hypercholesterolemia: For patients with high cholesterol due to genetic factors.
Dosage and Administration
Adult Dosage:
● For Hyperlipidemia: 20-40 mg once a day, preferably in the evening.
● For Prevention of Cardiovascular Events: Starting dose of 20 mg once a day, with possible adjustments based on cholesterol levels.
Pediatric Dosage:
● For Familial Hypercholesterolemia:From 4 -10 years it is started with a dose of 5 mg once a day which can be increased to a maximum of 20 mg/day. While 10-40 mg/day for children aged 10 years and older.
Side Effects of Simvastatin
● Common: Muscle pain, liver enzyme elevations, digestive upset.
● Serious: Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), liver damage, kidney failure.
● Pregnancy Category: Category X (contraindicated during pregnancy).
