Sevelamer: A Phosphate Binder for Managing Hyperphosphatemia in Chronic Kidney Disease
Sevelamer is a phosphate binder used to lower phosphate levels in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Elevated phosphate levels can lead to complications such as bone disease and cardiovascular events. This article explores Sevelamer’s role in managing CKD, its dosage, side effects, and common brands in India.
What is Sevelamer?
Sevelamer is a polymeric compound which binds to phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing its absorption. It is used in patients with CKD who are undergoing dialysis to reduce phosphate levels and prevent complications associated with hyperphosphatemia. It does not alter calcium, bicarbonate and aluminum concentrations in the body.
