Ketoconazole (topical) : The Antifungal Medication for Skin and Systemic Infections
What is Ketoconazole?
Ketoconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal used to treat various fungal infections, both topically and systemically. It is effective against conditions like athlete’s foot, ringworm, seborrheic dermatitis, and systemic fungal infections such as histoplasmosis and blastomycosis. Some studies have shown it to be effective in blocking androgen synthesis hence is used in prostate cancer.
How Ketoconazole Works
Ketoconazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of all fungal cell membranes. This action disrupts the integrity of the fungal membrane, leading to cell death and preventing the infection from spreading. It also alters the permeability of the cell membrane by blocking cytochrome P450. The drug also inhibits several fungal enzymes, leading to a toxic buildup of hydrogen peroxide inside the cell finally leading to cell death.
