Probenecid: The Medication for Gout and Uric Acid Overproduction
What is Probenecid?
Probenecid is a uricosuric agent used to treat gout and to prevent uric acid crystals from forming in the joints. It helps lower serum uric acid levels by increasing the renal excretion of uric acid, which is often elevated in gout.
How Probenecid Works
Probenecid competitively inhibits the reabsorption of uric acid in the kidneys, thus promoting its excretion through urine. This prevents the formation of uric acid crystals that can lead to gout flare-ups and joint damage.
