Olmesartan: The Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker for Hypertension
What is Olmesartan?
Olmesartan is an anti-hypertensive used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It relaxes the blood vessel walls, which decreases the blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems
How Olmesartan Works
Olmesartan is a selective and competitive angiotensin II receptor blocker, preventing the constriction of blood vessels, which leads to lower blood pressure. By blocking this receptor, Olmesartan helps relax blood vessels and reduces the strain on the heart. It also increases the urinary flow rate along with being a natriuretic and kaliuretic.
When to Use Olmesartan
● Hypertension: Olmesartan is used to treat essential hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults and children.
● Heart Failure: It is sometimes used to reduce the risk of heart failure complications when used in combination with other medications.

● Pediatric Dose: For children aged 6-16 years, the typical starting dose is 10 mg once daily, with potential adjustments based on response. The maximum dose is 20 mg/day.
Side Effects
● Common Effects: Dizziness, headache, fatigue, and gastrointestinal upset.
