Liraglutide: The GLP-1 Agonist for Diabetes and Weight Loss
What is Liraglutide?
Liraglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist used primarily for type 2 diabetes management and weight loss. It mimics the action of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone that regulates blood sugar, slows stomach emptying, and suppresses appetite.
How Liraglutide Works
Liraglutide helps the pancreas release insulin in response to meals, reduces glucagon secretion (which can increase blood sugar), and slows gastric emptying to prolong feelings of fullness. It also enhances insulin sensitivity in the liver and muscle tissue.
When to Use Liraglutide
● Type 2 Diabetes: Liraglutide is used to control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, especially when diet and exercise are insufficient.
● Obesity: It is also used for weight loss in patients with obesity or those who are overweight and have weight-related health conditions.
