Enalapril: The Essential ACE Inhibitor for Hypertension and Heart Failure
What is Enalapril?
Enalapril is an ACE inhibitor, commonly prescribed to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. By relaxing the blood vessels, Enalapril reduces the strain on the heart and lowers blood pressure, making it essential for managing cardiovascular diseases.
How Enalapril Works
Enalapril inhibits the enzyme responsible for converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. This relaxation of blood vessels helps reduce blood pressure and prevents heart failure symptoms from worsening.
When to Use Enalapril
● Hypertension: Lowers blood pressure to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.
● Heart Failure: Reduces fluid retention and improves the pumping efficiency of heart.
● Chronic Kidney Disease: Helps prevent kidney damage in hypertensive patients.
Dosage
● Adult Dose: 5–40 mg daily, divided into two doses. Intravenous injections (1.25 – 5 mg) infused over 5 minutes every 6 hours.
● Pediatric Dose: 0.08 mg/kg/day, max 5 mg/kg/day. Dose has to be adjusted based on the response.
